Top 5 Styling Tips From Fashion Designer Cheri Milaney
by MY WEEKLY
Award-winning designer Cheri Milaney takes inspiration from Italian style and loves creating clothes with sexy, romantic touches. She was one of the first designers to feature “real” women of all shapes, sizes and colours on the catwalk.
This week you have a chance to win Cheri’s perfume and one of her beautiful camisoles with My Weekly.
Here she shares some of her secrets to looking good…
Invest in a romantic, whimsical cardigan
Living in the UK, it’s hard to fully embrace summer when it comes to style. We all know that the sun can be beating down one minute and gone the next. A good cardigan is a wardrobe staple and is perfect for layering.
A style with a soft ruffle and a flowing, flattering look can lightly drape over the body. The knits in my cardigans are lightweight, but very trans-seasonal.
The knit adjusts to your body temperature and you can wear it with a matching dress, your favourite shift dress or with a cami and a pair of jeans.
Don’t be scared to show a little skin
Once women reach a certain age, it can be hard to convince them to show a little skin. But you don’t have to wear a mini skirt or cropped top to look sexy. An off-the-shoulder top is the perfect way to inject some glamour into your look without feeling too exposed.
The top can be dressed up or down, and looks just as good with a well-fitting pair of jeans as it does tucked into a smart pencil skirt.
A cami is a girl’s best friend
Every woman should own at least one good quality camisole. In all my years of styling, my customers have always struggled with what to wear under a shirt or dress. A cami top is the most versatile piece you can own and, if you get a good quality one, you can even wear it teamed with a pair of jeans.
I designed this cami top (here worn under an off-the-shoulder blouse) with my customers in mind and used Bordeaux flowers on the straps to hide bra straps. I have it available in several colours, as it’s a great staple piece and take the frustration out finding the right undergarment.

Cowl neck to balance hips
A soft collar will always draw attention away from unwanted areas and so I recommend cowl necks for my customers who want to balance out their hips.
Cowl neck tops and jumpers are so easy to wear, and are flattering and look very stylish and put-together.
The Bordeaux colour adds drama and richness. This design is shorter at the front and longer at the back, which creates an elongated, slimming effect.
Dress for every occasion
As much as we’d like to have countless dresses on hand, many of us don’t have the space or budget for this. But you can be prepared for most occasions with just one or two investment dresses that will never date.
They say a little black dress is all you need and although that is true, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment with a bit of colour. A good, well-fitted dress should be able to take you from a day at the office right through to a party in the evening.
