Cheri Milaney’s Biography

Cheri Milaney was destined to embark on the exciting world of fashion. She was already manifesting signs of a career when she was only six years old, sketching elaborate ball gowns. Cheri honed her natural talents at Olds College where she earned a Fashion Merchandising and Production diploma. She also studied privately under a French couturier to develop her couture skills. After her studies, she gained invaluable experience in retail sales management, fashion editorial and art direction, and visual merchandising and display. Cheri introduced her first Pret-a-Porter collection under the Cheri Milaney label in 1998 and still maintains creative control as the company’s principal designer.

As a woman herself Cheri appreciates that women want fashion they feel comfortable wearing and allows them to express their individuality. In the design process Cheri continually strives to create silhouettes that flatter the figure and enhance a woman’s best features. She’s meticulous about sourcing beautiful fabrics and trims, most of which are imported from Italy, to make every design unique and special.

In recognition of her talent, Cheri was honoured with the Matinee Fashion Foundation Award, Canada’s most prestigious fashion award. She also boasts an impressive list of international shows including Ningbo (China) International Fashion Week, Torino (Italy) Olympics Fashion Show, Vancouver (Canada) Fashion Week, and Toronto (Canada) Fashion Week. She has dressed numerous celebrities including Monita Rajpal/CNN Anchor, Emmanuelle Vaugier/Actress, Amy Sky/Singer and Song Writer, Erica Ehm/TV Personality, Tonya Lee Williams/Actress, The Young and the Restless, to name a few. Cheri has been featured in countless publications including National Post, The Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun, Hamilton Spectator, Calgary Herald, Chatelaine, Canadian Living, Elle, Famous Magazine, Women’s Post, and Vie Magazine. She has had numerous television and radio interviews including Fashion Television, CBC news, Toronto Living, Current Affairs, Beijing Television Network and many others. Inside Entertainment recognized Cheri as one of Canada’s most prominent up and coming designers.

In Fall 2009, in honour of the women she is inspired by and designs for, Cheri took the bold step of being one of the few courageous designers in the world to feature “real women”, non-professional models, on the runway. Her message was to challenge the status quo beauty and body image ideal in the fashion industry. The response from the media and general public was overwhelming. Cheri was featured in regional, national and international media and received hundreds of emails from women praising her courage and design talent.

Cheri’s next venture in the world of fashion was to introduce her own collection of fragrances. In 2009, after more than 2 years of research and product development, Cheri introduced the “Facets” fragrance collection, four unique scents that compliment and celebrate women’s’ individuality. Inspired by the fact that perfume is an integral part of the Italian culture, and that their perfumes are of the highest quality, Cheri decided to have the collection made in Italy. She was adamant about creating a quality product incorporating natural, organic ingredients from Italy.

Cheri lived in Italy where she studied Old World Art techniques (tempera, oil and fresco) at L’Accademia D’arte in Florence. She has since introduced a wonderful collection of paintings, interpretations of original old world paintings done by the masters, mainly from the Renaissance period.

Of course, wine has always been an integral part of the Italian culture, enjoyed with the wonderful food amongst family and friends, an expression of the depth, beauty and richness of the country. Cheri is proud to share this wonderful aspect of Italian culture with her friends and customers in Canada and the UK, via the exclusive distribution of Poggio Allegro wines of Sicily.

Cheri’s continues to be inspired by the passionate culture of Italy, where she has lived and still visits regularly.
